GENESIS AND CLUB AFFILIATIONS

The GSWGA is a non-profit organization that was founded on November 10, 1953 in order to provide statewide competition for New Jersey’s best women amateurs.  The tremendous amount of interest in women’s golf in the metropolitan area spurred the creation of the GSWGA by eleven Founding Members representing ten Founding Clubs.  (All of these Clubs are in existence today and are highlighted below.) Over the years we have enjoyed a steady expansion to our present relationship with fifty New Jersey clubs. In 2009, those affiliations include:

OVERVIEW

True to tradition, the GSWGA remains committed to preserving New Jersey women’s competitive amateur golf history. Currently, the handicap eligibility requirement includes maintaining an index of 12.4 (or under) for a minimum of one year (1) year before seeking membership. The GSWGA conducts approximately ten (10) annual tournaments that enable our members to gain competitive experience at the local level.  Two (2) notable and well known tournaments are the “Elizabeth Goss Round Robin” and the “36- Hole Stroke Play Championship”.  Points earned in these major events are recognized by the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association and are factored into the prestigious WMGA’s Player of the Year Award, as well as the selection of team members for the Golf Illustrated, Griscom Cup, and the French American Challenge teams.

FOR THE GOOD OF GOLF

The GSWGA continues to recognize and seek ways to give back to the game and all that it stands for.  We strongly encourage our members to be actively involved in state, regional and national organizations and to foster the ideals of this great game.  The GSWGA promotes avenues of volunteer work, including but not limited to, rating courses for the WMGA/MGA, and acting as markers/scorers for professional and amateur events in the metropolitan area. The GSWGA annually supports the efforts of the NJSGA Caddie Scholarship Foundation and the WMGA Scholarship Foundation.  It also contributes to the support of the three (3) players that are chosen to represent New Jersey in the USGA Women’s State Team competition, regardless of whether or not they are affiliated with the GSWGA.
